All
companies experience some level of “Regretted Turnover.”
That is, the departure of employees that the company wanted to retain.
But when regretted turnover is excessive, it can threaten a company’s
ability to meet productivity goals, customer service objectives,
and profitability requirements. Before regretted turnover reaches
that level, it’s time to identify the causes of regretted
turnover and take corrective measures.

The Exit
Interview |
One of the major tools in combating regretted
turnover is the Exit Interview. These specially-designed interviews
are used to determine the reasons why valued employees elect
to depart. While exit interviews can be extremely valuable,
it is important to recognize that, unless properly managed,
they can yield unreliable data.
Many departing employees are reluctant to provide the actual
reasons for leaving. Some fear that by doing so, they will
“burn their bridges.” Others fear their feedback
will be labeled as “sour grapes” or that they
will be viewed as Prima Donnas. Still others find the reasons
too embarrassing to discuss. This is particularly true where
some sort of harassment or workplace conduct has prompted
the departure.
For these reasons, it’s important that exiting employees
feel comfortable providing accurate feedback, without fear
of retribution or embarrassment. The best way to create a
non-threatening environment for exiting employees is to collect
their feedback anonymously. and preferably through a disinterested
third party.
